Realised my Cycling potential when I Covered 18 km in 32 Minutes in School, says National Champion and Steadfast Athlete Roshan Kumar

Steadfast athlete Roshan Kumar is currently the national champion and is training hard to win India’s first Olympic gold medal in cycling. Roshan has won several gold medals, including at the 4000 metre Team Pursuit at the All India University Track Cycling Championship 2020. In 2021, he won two bronze medals in the 60 km criterium and the 40 km Team Time Trial (TTT) at the All India University championship, Bikaner. The same year, Roshan was the 2nd Runner Up in 140 km Mass Start Event, Senior National Road Cycling Championship, Kurukshetra and finished fifth in the 15 km Scratch Race, Senior National Track Cycling Championship in Jaipur.

Roshan, who hails from Delhi NCR, has been a professional road biker since he was 17. Roshan started training and riding seriously when he was in 12th standard. He started cycling to commute for his tuition classes during his school days and cycled 15-20 km daily to his tuition class and back home. One day, Roshan had an emergency at home and covered 18 km in just 32 minutes, realising his potential in cycling. He rode daily with his cycling friends and was soon introduced to the Delhi team. He started training with the Delhi cyclists and kept improving his performance. Roshan participated in several private races and finished in good time. He bagged a bronze in the 80 km road race (U-18) National Road Cycling Championship in Aligarh in 2016- his first professional win.

Roshan excels at sprint finishes and has great team-building skills. Besides cycling, Roshan takes an interest in kabaddi and cooking.

“Being a cyclist gives me peace. It relaxes my mind and body and is my escape from the daily routine stress. I started cycling because it was very peaceful for me- now it is a huge part of my life,” says Roshan.

Roshan’s coach, Arvind Panwar, is also a champion Steadfast Athlete.

Roshan trains with Mr Panwar in Nainital, Uttarakhand. Roshan won a medal in national championships and is now officially working with the Indian Railways. He will continue to play national races and events, representing the Indian Railways.
