Frequently asked question

Ans: Focus on carb loading at least 36-48 hours before the race to maximise glycogen reservoirs. This provides sustained energy for the race. Choose easily-digestible carbohydrates and avoid excessive fibre and fat.

Ans: Have a meal comprising simple and complex carbohydrates with a moderate amount of fat and protein. These are easy to digest and not only provide a quick energy boost before the run but also sustain performance during the race. Oats, porridge, and sweet potato are good options to have before a run.

Ans: A day before the race, you should consume 4-6 small, carbohydrate-rich meals, each providing 4 to 5 g of carbohydrates per kg of body weight. This raises glycogen stores in the body ahead of the race.

Ans: Yes, athletes can use a supplement before a marathon but it is advised not to try new supplements on the day of the race in order to avoid gastrointestinal distress. Electrolyte drinks, carbohydrate drinks, creatine, nitrates and caffeine supplements can be taken before a marathon.

Ans: Before a full marathon, try to avoid foods that are high in protein, fat, and fibre as they are heavy on the gut and may cause digestive issues during the race.
